Why one glue rarely fits every repair

Home and hobby repairs often join materials that behave very differently: glass to metal, acrylic to ABS, foam board to cardboard, rubber trim to a painted surface. A thick general-purpose adhesive that works well on porous wood may craze clear acrylic or leave a cloudy bond line on glass. Flexible joints, like the seal around a sink or an outdoor frame, need a sealant that stretches with movement and does not crack when the substrate expands in heat. Rigid joints on clear parts need a water-clear adhesive whose cured bond line practically disappears. Spray lamination on craft foam needs a product that will not dissolve the foam. Getting the right product for the material and the joint type is the main factor in whether a repair holds.

Matching products to common tasks

For clear repairs on glass, acrylic, polycarbonate, or ABS, Krystal 2000 is a one-component UV and visible-light cure adhesive (365 nm) that is non-yellowing, and Krystal 3000 is a one-component UV-cure adhesive that cures colourless and transparent in thin films. Krystal 2000 has a high viscosity of 5000 to 7000 cps, which keeps it in place on vertical joints and slightly open gaps. Krystal 3000 has an ultra-low viscosity of 5 to 15 cps that wicks by capillary action into tight, close-fitting joints. Krystal 2000 is rated from -40 to +120 C and Krystal 3000 from -40 to +100 C, so both handle normal indoor and outdoor temperature swings. For mounting hooks, trim strips, or lightweight fixtures without drilling, AFT 1080GF is a grey acrylic foam tape with a 180-degree peel strength of 3000 g/25mm on metal, aluminium, stainless steel, acrylic, and glass. For sealing gaps around sinks, window frames, or outdoor fixtures, Taftflex 6221 is a paintable polyurethane sealant and adhesive that stays permanently elastic. Where the joint moves a lot, Taftflex 6292 offers around 600 percent elongation at break and cures at roughly 3 mm per 24 hours with atmospheric moisture. For spray lamination on craft projects, Taftspray 78 is a multipurpose aerosol that is polystyrene-safe and dries quickly with low mist.

Practical tips before you start

Surface preparation makes the biggest difference to bond strength. Clean the surfaces to remove dust, oil, and any release agent before applying any adhesive or tape. Krystal 2000 cures under UV and visible light at around 365 nm, so strong daylight or a 365 nm UV lamp will start it, while Krystal 3000 is UV-cure and needs a 365 nm UV source. Either way the light has to reach the bond line. This makes them ideal for clear parts like glass or acrylic where light passes through, but not for opaque or deeply shaded joints where light cannot reach. If you are using a spray adhesive on polystyrene foam, always confirm the product is rated polystyrene-safe before applying. Taftspray 78 is formulated to be polystyrene-safe. When using any solvent-based adhesive or polyurethane sealant indoors, open a window or run ventilation to keep fumes at a safe level. Check the Technical Data Sheet for the specific product before you start. Each TDS lists the recommended surface preparation, working time, cure conditions, and service limits for that product.
